Top 5 essentials for solo traveling

Depending on where you are traveling and what you have access to may change what you do or don’t pack. After enduring some solo travels of my own I’ve made note of five items I can’t seem to leave at home.

1.Market in Croatia, Baguu was used to carry groceries/ 2. Island near Zadar, Croatia ft. rubber Birkenstocks/ 3. Cranberries at market in Montreal

Can carry up to 50lbs! I must say I’ve carried quite the load with either - groceries, beach items, shopping sprees, somehow it always comes in handy. It fits right in my fanny pack/belt bag, it’s super light, versatile and as mentioned, somehow fits so many items.

An all-in-one tool. Not possible when only taking a carry on (if flying), but then I bring a spork/knife, to have one helpful tool in my kit. But, when possible, I pack my Swiss Army Knife. Not sure if it’s the scout in me, I always find a use for it. Whether when needing tweezers, a knife, toothpick or the bottle opener.

3. Power bank

Who are we kidding, phone batteries don’t last. I always like to have a charged-up power bank when out all day or unsure when I will be able to charge my phone next. I’ve been using the Helix power bank and been a fan so far.

4. Lululemon belt bag (or an equivalent)

It fits all the necessary essentials and there’s always room for additional items. I carry it in front of me, ensuring my passport and wallet are within reach. It also serves as a place to put a phone, keys, sunglasses, headphones, lip chap, hair comb, mini first aid kit, hand sanitizer and of course, a couple of snacks. Somehow, it all fits.

5. Birkenstocks (the rubber version)

The ideal sandal for a hostel shower, beach day, rainy day in the city or short walk. They don’t fit as flat as rubber flipflops. But, unlike flipflops, slides or other sandals they have some arch support and don’t rub between your toes.

A few “extra” items I like to pack if space permits:

·       Rain jacket (should realistically be in the top five list above)

·       A travel tin candle

·       Matches and/or lighter (have to light the candle somehow)

·       Toque (I love my Matchstick one and take it everywhere)

·       Headphones

·       Notebook

·       Disposable camera

The list could go on. Luckily, if something is forgotten it’s always possible to pick it up at the nearest drug store, gas station or even at the over-priced airport stores.

A great quote spotted on a bookstore window in Amsterdam.
